Do I still need to take birth control pills if my boyfriend says he had a vasectomy many years ago?

When my boyfriend and I got together, he said that he had a vasectomy many years ago. But, the first time we had , he asked, to make sure, that I was taking birth control. If he really had a vasectomy, would there be any need for me to still take my birth control pills?
