My psychiatrist wants me to see a counselor, but I'm absolutely terrified. Help?

Your friend is absolutely right. The medication will not cure you. They are a band-aid to reduce the severity of your symptoms. A therapist gets to the root of the problem. It is understandable that facing your problems is frightening. It's like opening a can of worms. However, if you truly want to heal you must take responsibility for yourself. It may be difficult but it is worth the journey. Therapy cured everything I had to deal with that years of meds did nothing for. The important thing is to ready yourself. Try talking into a mirror, opening up to your reflection. Once you are ready, make an appointment. Don't feel that this is a one doctor, once chance deal. You ,ay have to try out a few until you find the right chemistry. Once you do it's like talking to a friend. You don't have to open up all at once. You can take it as slowly and as comfortably as you wish. It does involve keeping an open mind, a willingness to grow and change and the security of knowing it will not hurt you, but rather improve you, your life and your overall health. Try writing a journal about these issues that scare you so, that have your defenses so high. It can be a very rewarding experience. You are scared of the unknown. Give it a chance and you might be surprised there's nothing to worry about after all.
