How to check if ipod nano 4g is broken?

My friend is sellin me a ipod nano 4g. Whn i buy it it will be in a park so i wont be able to plug the ipod nano into a computer. Ill just be able to navigate the menus. i will bring my headphones with me to test it out. It may or may not be stolen. How do i kno if there is anythin wrong with the ipod and if it will sync to itunes. Btw im not goin 2 see my friend who is sellin me the ipod so im not goin 2 hve a chance to return it. its a 50/50 chance of it being broken how can i make sure tht its not
